What is Deeper Learning? Student Work That Matters

Research shows that curious, intrinsically-motivated students become deep learners.  They master complex subjects, and, best of all, develop a sense of “fascination with the subject, a sense of its relevance to life and the world, a sense of accomplishment in mastering it, and a sense of calling to it” (DeLong and Winter, Learning to Teach and Teaching to Learn Mathematics).

To support teachers seeking to create a deeper learning experience, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has outlined six competencies aimed at producing high-level thinking and achievement:

  • Mastery of core academic content
  • Thinking critically and solve complex problems
  • Working collaboratively
  • Communicating effectively
  • Learning how to learn
  • Developing academic mindsets

At Areté, our small, seminar-style classes introduce and strengthen these competencies in all learners, combining passion-based learning, advanced-level thinking and meaningful challenges to ensure deep, authentic, joyful exploration and lasting understanding.

Areté students are active participants in their own education, entrusted with the voice and choice to explore what matters to them, under the guidance of our best-in-class faculty.

Come see for yourself what truly engaged learners — motivated by inherent interest rather than people-pleasing or grade-grubbing — look like. See how worksheet-less, packet-less, scantron-less learning, grounded instead in deep, authentic inquiry, can prepare your child to be a thought leader and a creative force in a job landscape requiring genuine thinking and real innovation.

If you’re ready to think beyond brand names and give your child the gift of truly deeper learning, we invite you to join one of our upcoming virtual admissions events:  a student-led open house discussion, an interactive virtual campus tour, or — for your curious learner — a high-interest sample seminar
